Hackers offered $1 million reward to exploit Google Chrome
Google is offering $1 million in cash prizes to people who cansuccessfully hack its Chrome browser at next week’s CanSecWest security conference. To put this into perspective, last year at the same event, Google offered $20,000, which was still considered a decent sum.
Google will reward winning contestants with prizes of $60,000, $40,000, and $20,000 depending on the exploits they demonstrate. The ‘Pwnium’ contest was announced on the Chrome blog on Monday
Prizes will be awarded until all of the $1 million has been given away, and winners will also receive a Chromebook.
At last year’s Pwn2Own competition, Internet Explorer and Safari were both toppled but Chrome is currently the only browser eligible for Pwn2Own never to be brought down.
Despite knowing absolutely nothing about hacking, this is brilliant PR from the security team at Chrome, who are using it as an opportunity to highlight their market-leading invulnerability. Well, so far, anyway.
