Battle of the Bands for FA Cup Anthem

By on Thursday, January 3, 2013

To celebrate it’s 150th anniversary, the Football Association are on the lookout to crown its first official FA Cup anthem.

The competition kicks off this Saturday when Lethal Bizzle performs at Upton Park, right before West Ham and Manchester United lock horns in the third round. This will then be followed by a series of pre-match gigs from the likes of Devlin, The Pigeon Detectives and the remaining unnannounced artists – with all six battling it out to become the winner.

Fans will be able to vote for their favourite on the official FA Cup site all the way up until the final, when the pre-match gigs are finished. Then, once the votes are counted, the winning track will be played on May 11th as the teams walk out onto the pitch for the FA Cup final.

Whilst the debate rages on about technology in the beautiful game, this is a great idea to add some extra spice to the world’s oldest domestic football competition.

It’ll also be a dream come true for whoever wins – since the FA have made sure each artist has their own link to football. Check out the interview with Lethal B below, and with him being a die hard Gooner, let’s hope the Hammers give him a chance to kick off the campaign in style:
