The world’s largest message-in-a-bottle, weighing 2.5 tons and measuring 26 feet (8m) long, was cast into the Atlantic ocean from Marina San Miguel, Tenerife yesterday. The cool thing is, its journey can be followed live on Solo’s Facebook page – here’s a quick link to the app (scroll down and click the Union Jack to change the language to English).

Norwegian soft drink Solo  is behind the stunt, alongside polar explorer Jarle Andhøy. Inside the bottle is a case of Solo and a 12 square meter personal letter to the finder.

The project was covered in today’s UK Metro (page 31), though as Fullers Brewery’s Tony Johnson pointed out when he highlight the effort, without a mention as to who’s behind it.

Here’s where the bottle was last spotted:

Andhøy had the following to say:

“Like all great expeditions, it has demanded months of hard work and preparation. I just hope it’s not run over by a tanker on the first day.”

Solo’s CEO Joakim Sande said the reason for the stunt was because it was ‘heartbreaking’ that only Norwegians should get chance to taste what he called ‘the best soda in the world’.

The bottle was designed by Norwegian industrial designer Bård Eker, who said:

“It has insurance and the required navigation lights for a drifting object in international waters, not to mention solar panels, satellite-connection and tracking technology. A 140-liter fresh water tank with remote controlled nozzles will clear the lenses of the custom made camera which will upload a picture every 8 hours. It just might be the greatest bottle ever made…probably the most expensive one too!”
