McDonald’s uses free wifi to hijack customers

By on Friday, July 26, 2013

Sick of neighbouring businesses using the free wifi offered by McDonald’s restaurants for their own customers, the chain in Spain came up with a nifty way to get revenge: by using their wifi to hijack their customers.

By changing the name of their wifi offerings to highlight exclusive offers people would get by going into the McDonald’s instead, they lured them in with this clever use of a largely untapped media source….as well having some fun with diners by hitting them with cheeky messages that could lead to some great word-of-mouth exposure.

This cheeky activity also picked up a Bronze Lion at Cannes.
