In a stunt to promote an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations (being shown on TV channel Drama this Bank Holiday weekend) five ghostly Miss Havishams appeared in Tube carriages and on London buses this morning.

The quintet also visited Big Ben at 8.40am (according to the Mirror, ‘the time Charles Dickens’s famous spinster stops the clocks around her when she is jilted in the book’*) and the author’s final resting place in Westminster Abbey.

Costume designer Katya Wildman said: “We watched a number of actresses playing Miss Havisham, including Gillian Anderson, Helena Bonham Carter and Charlotte Rampling.

“We wanted to capture Miss Havisham’s ethereal beauty as well as the decaying of her clothes and spirit as a result of her long period of mourning for the wedding she never had.”

*No, I’ve never read or seen Great Expectations. GOD, GET OFF MY BACK, MUM.
